Agus Mediana Cuprux

Agus Mediana Adiputra, widely known as Cuprux, is a painter whose artistic journey spans from realist expression to abstraction. This progression is rooted in his deepening relationship with his surroundings, both personally and within his studio practice, as he seeks to interpret the essence of everyday life, particularly in relation to Balinese tradition.

Cuprux adopts abstraction as a visual language to articulate his reflections. His work draws on careful observation: examining objects, rituals, behaviors, and their interconnections, all situated within the framework of Balinese culture. Through this lens, he reconfigures traditional forms and meanings in a contemporary visual syntax.

Central to his practice is a meditative engagement with repetition, seen in the consistent layering of fine lines. This repetitive gesture becomes a symbolic echo of the rituals and customs that shape his lived experience. Among these lines, scattered pixel-like squares emerge seemingly at random, interrupting the flow. These forms act as a metaphor for the invasive nature of modernity, reflecting the tension between traditional values and contemporary life in Bali.

Cuprux’s paintings are deeply introspective, embodying a constant internal dialogue: a confrontation between preserving ancestral knowledge and embracing radical transformation. His visual language invites viewers to peel back.

Gesture, 2025
120 x 180 cm (Diptych)
Acrylic on canvas

The diptych Gesture (2025) is a contemplative exploration of expression rooted in tradition. This work seeks to carry forward the spirit of tradition once embodied in the earlier works of SDI (Sanggar Dewata Indonesia), whose expressionist approach found inspiration in the sweeping movements of traditional Balinese dance. The vigorous and explosive strokes that once mirrored the dynamic gestures of dance are reimagined here in a more subtle, yet equally vibrant form.

Cuprux delves into expressionism through a meditative engagement with line. His repetitive, linear strokes emerge with a sense of calm, a visual language shaped by introspection and reverence. In contrast to the outward, explosive gestures of dance, these drawn lines move inward, as if tracing a spiritual path. The expressionist lines in this work do not merely depict form, but rather evoke a self-reflective critique, an invitation to peel back and rework the inner self.
