I Dewa Nyoman Jati
I Dewa Nyoman Jati was born in Ubud in 1940. He learned to paint from his uncle, I Dewa Putu Bedil. His works often depict scenes of everyday life in Bali, such as the dynamics of fishing communities or people working in the rice fields.
Jati’s paintings are distinguished by his unique portrayal of tall, athletic human figures. These graceful forms are typically placed prominently within natural landscapes, rendered in a palette that leans toward realism. The name “Jati” was sometimes written as “Djati”—a reflection of the old Indonesian spelling conventions he used before the introduction of the Enhanced Spelling System (Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan) in 1972.
