I Ketut Ginarsa
I Ketut Ginarsa was born in Banjar Tebesaya, Ubud, in 1953. After completing elementary school, he studied painting under I Wayan Djudjul from 1970 to 1973. Ginarsa’s works often depict everyday life, capturing scenes that reflect both the cultural traditions of Bali and the agricultural lifestyle he experienced growing up in Tebesaya.
He skillfully adopted the anatomical influences of the Ubud painting style, which emerged following the arrival of Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet. Ginarsa’s use of simple color palettes and tonal variation gives a sense of depth to the main subjects in his compositions. His technical precision is also evident in the ngeskes process—the Balinese method of shading (dusel)—which he executes with finesse using a bamboo brush and Chinese ink.
