I Nyoman Lesug
I Nyoman Lesug was born in Banjar Kutuh, Ubud, in 1939. He began painting in 1953 under the guidance of Ida Bagus Rai. In addition to being a painter, Lesug also served as a Pemangku, or temple priest.
His works often depict scenes of everyday village life. The distinctive style known as "Lesugism", also referred to as the "Kutuh school"—especially evident in the works of his students—is characterized by the portrayal of large-scale human figures in communal rituals and ceremonies, such as ngayah (voluntary service), mecaru (ritual offerings), ngaben (cremation ceremonies), and the carrying of ogoh-ogoh effigies.
