I Nyoman Londo

I Nyoman Londo was born in Penestanan, Ubud, in 1948. He came from a poor farming family and spent his early years herding ducks in the village. In 1960, Londo joined the Young Artist painting collective, led by Arie Smit in Penestanan. From that point on, he pursued a lifelong career as a painter.

Like many painters of his generation from Penestanan, Londo’s work draws inspiration from everyday village life, particularly agrarian activities in and around Penestanan. His paintings are known for their vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes, applied using the plakat technique—a method of layering thick, opaque paint. This approach contrasts with the traditional Balinese painting style, which typically uses transparent color washes.

The strength of Londo’s visual expression lies in his use of striking color combinations and compositions that highlight human figures set within lush, agricultural landscapes—bringing the rhythm of rural life vividly onto the canvas.
