I Wayan Taweng
I Wayan Taweng was born in Batuan in 1926. He began learning to paint at the age of 10 under I Nyoman Ngendon, and later studied with his older brother, I Ketut Tomblos, who was nine years his senior. Under Tomblos’s guidance, Taweng made significant artistic progress.
Taweng is regarded as a modernizer of the Batuan painting style, known for introducing everyday and popular subjects into his work—such as coastal life and farming scenes that involve entire families working together in the rice fields. His compositions are notable for their openness; unlike the densely filled canvases typical of Batuan art, Taweng’s works make room for visual breathing space.
I Wayan Taweng passed away in 2005.
