Made Griyawan
Made Griyawan
(born 1980, Batuan, Bali)
Made Griyawan was born and raised in Batuan, Bali, where he continues to live and work. He has presented his works in both solo and group exhibitions. His paintings often begin with detailed drawings on paper or canvas, which he gradually transforms through the application of layered colors. These overlapping hues, placed side by side or built in translucent veils, create striking contrasts and gradients that are visually captivating. The image of water—blue and white wave-like strokes—is a recurring element in his compositions, evoking a sense of movement and serenity.
Griyawan is also the founder of Studio Gelombang, one of the most vital platforms for contemporary development in Batuan painting today. Beyond his own art practice, he dedicates himself to teaching children from various backgrounds, fostering a spirit of regeneration in Balinese painting. Through his mentorship, he encourages young artists to explore their imagination using the techniques of the Batuan style. His own works reflect this same spirit, rich in visual play and technical exploration; they merge traditional methods with more fluid and open compositions, without losing the essence of the Batuan painting tradition.
His most recent solo exhibition, Bermain di Atas Air ("Playing on Water"), was held at TiTian Art Space, Ubud, Bali in 2020. Previous solo shows include Windows Onto Another World at The Gallery, Maya Sanur Resort & Spa, Bali (2018), and Awakening Soul at the Tokyo International Art Fair, Japan (2016). Among his notable group exhibitions are Panca Mahabhuta at The Apurva Kempinski, Bali (2024); Peradaban Amarna Warna Bali at Gala Rupa Balinesia Art Space, Bali (2022); and Balinese Masters: Aesthetic DNA Trajectories of Balinese Visual Art at ITDC Nusa Dua, Bali (2019).
