Made Wiradana
I Made Wiradana
(b. 1968, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia)
I Made Wiradana is a Balinese artist who graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, majoring in fine art. He was an active member of the modern artist collective Sanggar Dewata Indonesia, serving as its chairman from 2000 to 2002. Since the early 2000s, Wiradana has been committed to exploring modern concerns in his artistic practice. Shortly after, he shifted toward postmodernism, culminating in his controversial exhibition “The End of Art Declaration 2001” at ARMA Museum in Ubud, Bali. There, he challenged Western aesthetic conventions—such as rational ideas of light, media use, and visual composition—through parody and critical engagement, in search of new artistic perspectives.
Wiradana’s works are deeply rooted in personal expression and freedom of imagination. His visual language is marked by figurative yet naïve forms that resemble prehistoric cave paintings. These primal images, rendered with spontaneous and intuitive gestures, are the result of years of artistic development. His approach is fearless—lines, shapes, and colors are channeled with conviction and unrestrained fluidity. His style reflects an instinctive confidence and a rejection of rigid formal structures.
Since 1989, Wiradana has participated in numerous exhibitions across Bali, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, as well as internationally in Hong Kong, South Korea, China, India, and Belgium. His achievements include several accolades, among them awards from the Indonesian Ambassador to Belgium (2006), the Consulate General of Indonesia–China and the National Museum Qingdao in Beijing, as well as a gold medal from the Art Asia Biennale in Hong Kong in 2017.

Wiradana’s works are deeply rooted in personal expression and the freedom of imagination. His visual language is characterized by figurative yet naïve forms that evoke the raw immediacy of prehistoric cave paintings. These primal images—often composed of spontaneous, intuitive gestures—are the culmination of years of artistic exploration and inner reflection.
Strongly influenced by the magical simplicity of Balinese rerajahan drawings, his art channels energy through dynamic lines and symbolic forms, blending tradition with individual vision. Wiradana’s approach is fearless and instinct-driven. Lines, shapes, and colors are applied with conviction and fluidity, unburdened by academic constraint.
His style reflects an instinctive confidence and a deliberate rejection of rigid formal structures. Instead, he embraces a process that is both meditative and expressive, allowing his imagination to move freely and transform subconscious impressions into symbolic, energetic compositions.
