Ni Nyoman Sani
Ni Nyoman Sani was born on August 10, 1975, in Sanur, Bali, as the seventh of eight children in a family of modest means—her father, Ni Ketut Regug, was a fisherman, and her mother, Ni Made Tumbuh, ran a souvenir shop. In 1995, she began formal training in the arts by enrolling at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Denpasar, from which she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2001. She currently lives and works in Sanur as a professional artist.
Sani’s artistic practice revolves around the female body and the journey of self-discovery and spiritual introspection. Her body of work spans a range of media and themes, from explorations of fashion and femininity to abstract studies of line and form through collage. One of her more recent series features dynamic compositions constructed from thousands of small, raised white dots. These dots, when illuminated by sunlight, cast shadows that shift in length depending on the angle and distance of the light source. This subtle play of light and shadow reflects her deeply personal and spiritual engagement with the intangible and the metaphysical—each dot a trace of her long and contemplative journey toward understanding forces beyond human perception.
Sani has participated in several international artist residencies, including in Haarlem, the Netherlands (2010), and the Bali-Darwin Artist Camp from 2014 to 2016. Her works are part of notable public and private collections, including the Tropenmuseum in the Netherlands, the Asia-Africa Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, and the Njana Tilem Museum in Ubud, Bali. Her artistic journey was documented in the monograph The Paintings of Ni Nyoman Sani (2005), and in 2023 she was awarded First Prize in the UOB Painting of the Year competition, marking a significant recognition of her contribution to contemporary Indonesian art.
