A.A. Raka Puja
Born in 1932 in Banjar Padang Tegal, Ubud, Anak Agung Gede Raka Puja began his career painting in the traditional Ubud style, characterized by flat compositions and the use of abur (shading) and sigar (highlighting) techniques to suggest volume. Over time, however, his approach evolved—particularly after his engagement with artists from the Golongan Pelukis Ubud (Ubud Painters’ Group). This exposure influenced a shift in his work toward more volumetric and anatomically informed figuration, though his paintings continued to retain strong elements of Balinese decorative tradition.
His subjects span a wide range of Balinese life, from Gong drama performances and Gambuh theater to bustling market scenes, rendered with a blend of near-realism and intricate detail. While embracing modern visual sensibilities, his works remain deeply rooted in the cultural and ritual fabric of Bali.
Throughout his career, he participated in numerous exhibitions. Notably, in 2005, his paintings were included in the Gianyar Painting Exhibition at the YDBA Gallery (Yayasan Dharma Bhakti Astra) in Jakarta. Several of his works have also been featured in high-profile art auctions in Jakarta, The Hague, and Amsterdam, cementing his position as an important figure in the evolution of Balinese modern painting.
