Suarimbawa Dalbo
Made Suarimbawa (Dalbo)
Born 1977, Bali. Lives and works in Bali.
I Made Suarimbawa, better known as Dalbo, is a contemporary Balinese artist whose practice challenges traditional narratives within Balinese art. He graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta in 2004, majoring in painting. As part of a new generation of Balinese artists, Dalbo seeks to move beyond the "Baliseering" aesthetic—a style shaped by portrayals of dance, Hindu rituals, and cultural performances often tailored for tourism.
Collaborating with collectives such as Sanggar Dewata Indonesia and the Skizofriends Art Movement, Dalbo advocates for alternative perspectives in Balinese visual art. His work frequently involves mixed media—paper, clay, and acrylic—and reflects his ongoing exploration of cultural identity and contemporary issues. His choice of recycled materials, such as used paper, reflects a conscious rejection of traditional sculpture norms and a commitment to ecological and conceptual resilience.
In Narasi Menunggu Kelahiran (Narrative Awaiting Birth, 2016), for example, he crafted a child figure using paper and glue, alongside a pregnant mother figure composed of corrugated paper, aluminum, and cocoon fiber. This piece exemplifies his material experimentation and symbolic layering. In December 2016, Dalbo participated in a group exhibition at Forty-Five Downstairs Gallery in Melbourne, Australia, showcasing eleven Balinese artists pushing the boundaries of tradition in contemporary art.

The work “Won’t Lovers Revolt Now?” (2025) explores the idea of dual unity — where two are one and one is two. It reflects on how life is experienced through paired dualities (refined/raw, dark/light, female/male, masculinity/femininity, maternal/paternal, and so on). Despite appearing in contrast or opposition, these dual aspects coexist, interrelate, and ultimately reveal an underlying unity that brings about harmony. When balance is maintained between the two, harmony emerges.
The concept behind “Won’t Lovers Revolt Now?” draws from the Balinese myth of Semara Ratih — the divine lovers, Semara (Sun God) and Ratih (Moon Goddess). Dalbo uses abstraction to present opposing forms and patterns rooted in Balinese daily traditions. The creative process — one of fragmentation and integration, reminiscent of offerings such as canang or banten — embodies the essence of love, compassion, and sacrifice portrayed in the myth. The work not only symbolizes the harmonious duality of a couple but also reflects the balance within each individual.
