The theme of "Parallel: legacies in flux" profoundly resonates with the contemporary discourse on artistic heritage. Co-organized by the Department of Chinese Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and Ubud Art Ground in Bali, Indonesia, this exhibition serves as a deep cross-cultural dialogue that traverses both time and space—a collective exploration of the enduring question of how art is inherited and transformed.
As a unique artistic form, Chinese painting carries the profound legacy and spiritual core of millennia of Chinese civilization. From Gu Kaizhi of the Eastern Jin who "captured spirit through form," to Wu Daozi of the Tang dynasty whose strokes were as smooth and graceful as the wind, from the Song dynasty’s pursuit of subtle realism to the Yuan literati’s expressive freedom—each era, while rooted in tradition, infused new vitality, shaping distinctive artistic identities. Tradition is the wellspring of Chinese painting—like a vast river drawing wisdom from the ancients, it continuously nourishes the creativity of generations to come.
In today’s context, Chinese painting faces both the challenges and opportunities brought by rapid technological change, globalization, and cultural pluralism. Yet, it remains anchored in its core values. With its unique brushwork, aesthetic sensibility, and cultural depth, it demonstrates enduring vitality and remarkable adaptability. To emphasize the foundational role of tradition is not to cling rigidly to the past—on the contrary, tradition is an open and evolving system. It thrives through integration and renewal. Contemporary practitioners delve into classical canons while seeking expressions attuned to the present: blending traditional techniques with modern concepts, innovating in subject matter, composition, and color, and expanding creative horizons through interdisciplinary exploration. Through brush and ink, they inscribe the spirit of the times, forging a synthesis of personal emotion and social consciousness. Drawing upon the strengths of Western art while remaining grounded in national identity and cultural integrity, they sustain a dynamic interplay of preservation and innovation—revitalizing Chinese painting with fresh contemporary vigor.
This exhibition presents a rare opportunity to engage in a profound dialogue with Balinese art. Like Chinese painting, Balinese art is rich in history and shaped by strong regional characteristics, while also undergoing its own contemporary metamorphosis. Through the lens of "Parallel: legacies in flux", we observe a striking parallel: despite divergent cultural geographies, the laws of artistic evolution often converge. Across both traditions, we witness a shared pursuit—the dialectical balance between the traditional and the modern, enabling ancient art forms to radiate anew in the present.
The collaboration with Ubud Art Ground lays a foundation for long-term exchange. We hope this initiative will strengthen ties with the Indonesian art scene, fostering artist residencies, academic research, and broader cultural exchange. Such cross-cultural interactions will undoubtedly inject fresh perspectives into Chinese painting and enhance global appreciation and love for Chinese art.
